Back a couple of years ago, I saw a documentary on a boy who raised enough funds to help build a well for a small African village. The boy raised more than $100,000 through various efforts to help build wells in Africa. The village invited the boy to come to Africa to see how his efforts had brought life and improved health for so many people. They treated him like a foreign dignitary.
The boy went to extraordinary efforts to meet a basic need of life. He did what he could. He raised awareness of a need and became a champion for people on the other side of the globe. This is the kind of life that Jesus has called us to life. We are not supposed to be a people of good intentions and positive vibes. We are supposed to do the hard work of making miracles come true. I love how Jesus used the disciples in the feeding of the multitudes. They found the food and distributed it. God made it be more than enough. Likewise, God wants to use His people today to be vehicles to make miracles happen. God doesn't do it all because He desires for us to be his hands and feet.
Recently, a news story about the global water problems caught my attention. Then I saw an ad in a Christian magazine about a relief organization focused on meeting the water need. This has caused me to think a lot about how carrying a cup of water in Jesus name can really open the door for the Gospel.
Here is a description of the global water problem from the Web site of Lifewater International (www.lifewater.org). "Like no other resources, water is the foundation for life. Worldwide, 1.1 billion people lack access to safe, clean drinking water. That is roughly one-sixth of the world’s population. (World Health Organization) The absence of this precious resource results in a host of debilitating problems, from life-threatening diseases to missed educational and employment opportunities. Access to safe, clean water is critical for proper health care, hygiene, sanitation, food production, education, and economic activity. It is the foundation on which everything else in a community is built."
Consider joining me in praying for God to meet the global need for clean water. Consider going even further by looking for practical ways to help bring living water to a world that desperately needs it. For ideas visit Lifewater's Web site.
