While it may seem obvious to most, I never ever thought about it until last night. And what is the "it" you ask. Well, it is the idea that there are people in the world who do not believe in a human heart or soul. I guess it should not come as a surprise since scientists like to tell us that we evolved from nothing. Many academics try as hard as they can to deny the grand design in nature or look for only physical causes to things. And that's Ok, because they get paid to be skeptical and say, "Prove it to me." But why do some people put such great faith in evolution or other scientific theories and yet refuse to even consider the fact that a spiritual, non-physical element exists and impacts the world around us? Why is the concept of God so unscientific but macro evolution seems like common sense to modern scientists? I for one see more evidence of a grand design and Creator than I do the existence of macro evolution.
Please don't get me wrong. I am all for academic research and science. I believe that true science and correct Biblical theology have nothing to fear from each other. But I do wonder if sometimes the quest for facts and formulas get in the way of what is easily observable to the common man. We are more than just DNA and memories.
For years, "experts" have said that there is a physical explanation for everything. But then we encounter things in nature and society that defy explanation. While some call these miracles, maybe God considers these to be the norm. Oh and then "experts" say that we are basically controlled by our past experiences and are a product of our environment. But then we see people do things that they have no previous experience with. If we are a product of our environment, why can two kids from the exact same family turn out so different?
There are times when I have had thoughts that I know had to come from outside my intellect because I had never heard of such a concept before. This is especially true as I pray and read the Bible. Suddenly, a completely new thought or revelation pops in my head, and I know it is the Holy Spirit opening my mind to new truth.
The spirit realm is real even though it is invisible. Almost like the force in Star Wars, I have felt things in the past like the presence of evil without knowing what is going on around me. Later I learn that I was near a whore house (Mexico) or a cult/witchcraft shop (Ohio). Likewise, I have walked past a room and been hit with the presence of God so thick that I knew I wanted to be in there.
Even the current culture understands what some scientists won't admit, we are more than just flesh and bones. We have a heart even though it may be hard to explain and impossible to pinpoint. We have a soul - a seat of emotion, will, conscience and desire. Popular songs and art are full of references to our heart and soul. I believe that this reflects the general belief that a person is more than just DNA and RNA.
Is the brain critical for life? Absolutely, you would not be you without it. But is the brain the only thing that makes you uniquely you? I don't think so because this would do little to separate man from the rest of nature. If we only had a brain would man be much different than a pigeon or even an ape? I believe that more than just a superior brain separates man from the rest of creation. Man has a mind and a soul. The soul consists of several ingredients, including the heart. And if you don't believe me, just look around and see what real life seems to indicate even if some scientific theories are missing the mark.
