This morning I enjoyed a great omelet at Beth's Cafe in Seattle. It's the kind of place that has lots of local color and great food. Servers are giving each other a hard time. Some of them look like they just came from a punk rock concert. The walls are lined with pictures drawn by patrons. Many of them may be the result of a hangover. Regardless the mental state of the artists, each one tells a story. While scanning the many humorous pictures, I stumbled upon the following note on the wall:
"This is just one more piece of paper. It will blend in with the others and get lost among them. But it is special, unique. Also, like the others, it may not be much to look at, but it was attended to with care and effort. Thus, it is worth your time and attention, if only for a moment."
I liked the creativity represented on the piece of paper. It was one of the few that were just plain text. Yet it spoke volumes. Most people have at one time or another had to write in class or at work and struggled to find something to write. The blank piece of paper seems to mock you while the clock ticks away.
Sometimes we tend to feel just like another person amidst a sea of faces. But the author of the note on the wall had a great point. We are all unique and worthy of respect. The notes and pictures on the wall were just paper. But the thoughts, ideas and creativity on the paper represent the person behind them - a unique individual created in the image of God.
