My God Is This Big... - Written: 9/8/2005

The other day I had the pleasure of living an IMAX moment. You know the kind of thing I am talking about...right? You get a 360 degree view of one of nature's greatest scenes and you think, "Wow, that's incredible." Your mouth falls open as you are surrounded by the vastness of creation. But this was no movie. It was real life.

I traveled to the Cascade Mountains and went to Mount Baker on my way back to Seattle. My journey took me to Artist Point (5,140 feet) between Mount Shuksan and Mount Baker. Then I climbed even higher to Table Mountain for a more private view of these two peaks. At one point on top of Table Mountain, I took a deep breath and thanked God for such a divine moment. I felt so small, yet I began to realize just how big God is. Overcome by the scene, I wanted some way to capture the essence of it so I took a 360 degree view with my camera of what I saw. But I know that there is no way that film can capture the awe inspiring view that God gave me that day.

At 10,778 feet Mount Baker is not even the tallest mountain in the state of Washington, yet it soars over the tallest building on earth. Currently, the tallest floored building on the planet is the Taipei Tower in Taiwan. It rises to 1,670 feet tall. Engineers have designed plans for the Burj Dubai tower in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The building will stand 2,313 feet when completed and is expected to be an engineering marvel. Man has a hard time engineering skyscrapers that are nearly half a mile tall. But God has no problem speaking into existence peaks like Mount Everest, which reaches 29,035 feet high.

Sometimes we need mountain moments to look around and know that someone much bigger than us is there. He created everything and continues to watch over us despite all the storms of life. When I need to be inspired or get a little perspective on life, I tend to head to the mountains. It is there that I begin to understand just how big God is and how small my problems really are by comparison.
