Total Depravity - Written: 10/6/2005

While we may not be the most sinful civilization in history, I believe that we are likely the most depraved and potentially deceived. How did I arrive at this conclusion? Well, we have more books, teaching resources and tools to help spread the Gospel than ever before. We have a greater anointing of the Holy Spirit after the resurrection than before it. We have a long established history of Christianity.

Today, the average person in modern societies have a greater level of affluence, technology and opportunity than at any previous time in human history. Man has accomplished scientific miracles over the past 100 years that boggle the mind. From the atomic bomb to discovering DNA to exploring the depths of the ocean, human achievement has decreased our apparent need for God all the while exposing the great genius of how creation works. Society has embraced postmodern thought and created an atmosphere where everyone can become a god. For many people, they create god in their image and according to their desires. Nothing seems to be right or wrong.

And our prosperity, especially in Western nations, has made us arrogant, selfish and depraved. Many do not see their need for God. People seek fulfillment in everything else but God.

Nothing seems sinful any more. In the minds of many people, sin has been reduced to simple mistakes. It has become a popular hobby to dismiss our responsibility for our actions.

Society wants to call good evil and evil good. Gross sexual sin is rampant throughout society. It has tainted huge percentages of people who claim to be Christians too. Pornography is everywhere now. What people watch for entertainment is remarkably violent, mostly void of morals, and full of ungodly sexual messages and images. We slaughter millions of innocent children every year in the name of convenience. Sin is rampant.

When you consider Sodom and Gomorrah, those who worshipped Baal, and the gross brutality and sensuality of the Roman Empire, there are a lot of other really sinful times in history. But we have more advantages and knowledge than any other. We know more about the brain and the body than any other civilization. We have far superior technology and wealth. Despite the advantages, our gross sin and high level of knowledge reveals our great depravity. We have been given much and have little to show for it from a spiritual development perspective. The world has been given over to a depraved mind. And it is our responsibility to be Christ's messengers to redeem creation.
