Traditions of Men - Written: 12/24/2005

Today, I went for a walk with my spiritual mentor, Don Coleman. We talked about how we can easily miss God by becoming too religious. Traditions can be great. We need them. But sometimes, they can get in the way, especially if people put too big of a focus on them.

Consider the following:

Mark 7:13 (NIV): Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that."

Mark 7:13 (NLT): As such, you break the law of God in order to protect your own tradition. And this is only one example. There are many, many others."

God is calling the Church to embrace the ancient message of the Christian faith without being wedded to methods and traditions that man has made sacred along the way. We don't need to do something new or different just to be cutting edge. No, we need to do something different because God is not static. He is moving and active. While God is the same, yesterday, today and forever, how He works in His people changes throughout time and from place to place and people to people. Are we keeping up?
