You want me to do what? - Written: 2/14/2006

I think that God must get a kick out of what He asks us to do sometimes. Sure, He always has a good reason for every request that He makes. But sometimes we just don't get it. Consider the various things that God called the prophets to do in the Hebrew Scriptures. Or if you think about what Jesus told His disciples.

Sometimes God just doesn't make sense. We do a mental double take and ask for clarification. But it's no use. We just can't seem to figure God out. In those times, we need to simply trust and obey.

What would you do if God had asked you to do the following? "Take off all your clothes, including your sandals. Walk around naked in public for three years."

That is basically what God told Isaiah to do as a sign of the forthcoming destruction of the Egyptians and Ethiopians. Go see for yourself in Isaiah 20. While a very radical symbol, this image was meant to get the people's attention. God gave the following message, "For the king of Assyria will take away the Egyptians and Ethiopians[b] as prisoners. He will make them walk naked and barefoot, both young and old, their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt."

Now, I am not encouraging naked prophecy. People should wear clothes in public. But I do believe that sometimes God calls us to do extreme things because that is what is needed to get the attention of hard-hearted people. So the next time you get a crazy idea, it may just be from God.
