Angels have seen a lot in their lives. From the glory of God in heaven to mighty miracles on earth, it must take a lot to get the attention of an angel. These beings have great strength, intelligence and a capacity to serve God. They have face-to-face contact with God.
Have you ever wondered what amazes an angel? What are the great mysteries that they long to look upon? You might be surprised by the answer. And if you are, this reveals more about your misunderstanding of the Gospel than it does poor assumptions about angels.
1 Peter 1:9-12 (KJV)
9Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven which things the angels desire to look into.
According to the above passage of Scripture, the angels desire to see the Gospel lived out by the people of God. They want to see the reality in our lives as we press through to the end of faith, the salvation of our souls. The message of new life in Christ, which came down from heaven, is what gets angels excited. The Spirit of God breathed into His people enabling us to be Spirit-led people in physical bodies. Using our free will to become more like Christ is what causes angels to marvel at God's plan. Jesus gave us the power to become sons of God.
It can be easy to lose sight of the glorious mystery of the Gospel. Churched people hear some words over and over to the point that they forget how precious and amazing the truths of God are. God has called us to be His physical representative on this planet. We are to be His agents to bring restoration and change.
Given what happened at the original fall of mankind, angels desire to see the situation reversed as man takes His God-given placed of authority. If your relationship with God and appreciation for the Gospel has lost its zeal, ask for the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to the mystery of the good news we find in the life of Christ. Seek to wonder just as the angels did at the work of Christ in us - the hope of glory.
