The Power of God's Word - Written: 3/13/2006

Today, while walking with Brett Hiem, at Three Lakes Park, the Holy Spirit opened up to me another truth about God and His Word. It can be real easy to lose sight of the power in God's Word. We can fall into the trap of thinking it is just another book. We can think that God's words are just as powerless and empty as those spoken by many men. But this is not true.

When God speaks, things happen. Everything in the world was formed by the voice of God. Consider Psalm 29:3-9:

3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters
       the God of glory thunders,
the LORD thunders over the mighty waters.

4 The voice of the LORD is powerful
the voice of the LORD is majestic.

5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars
the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.

6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
Sirion [a] like a young wild ox.

7 The voice of the LORD strikes
       with flashes of lightning.

8 The voice of the LORD shakes the desert
the LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh.

9 The voice of the LORD twists the oaks [b]
       and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, "Glory!"

There is power in the voice of God. There is destiny in the words of God. It is living and active. It helps us see who we are and who God wants to make us to be. It divides to the very depth of who we are allowing God to transform us.

Unlike the words of men that sometime fail. Isaiah 55:10-11 tells us that the words of God will accomplish what God sets out to do.

This has a practical reality in everyday life. All things that are physical came from that who is Spirit. According to Colossians 1:16-17 (NLT), "Christ is the one through whom God created everything in heaven and earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can't see kings, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities. Everything has been created through him and for him. He existed before everything else began, and he holds all creation together."

Not only is Jesus the Creator of all things. He is also the one who keeps everything running. Jesus did not make everything by His words, give the world a whirl and walk away. No, He is active in creation today. His words framed the world and guide its daily operation. Nothing that exists today would be here without the words of God. And it is God's Word, which helps us understand all of creation because God holds all things together by His words.
